Hm, there are of course a number of other things each of us could do
to fight and eventually hopefully end aging. One thing that comes to mind is:
Donate to the
Methulselah Foundation
Betterhumans members can do this as part of the Betterhumans The 300 group donation to support SENS research. Here is how it works:
The group
was founded by Betterhumans Deputy Editor Veritas who in doing so
had to shoulder the full pledge of $25000 (to be donated over a period
of 25 years, i.e., $1000 per year). So far Veritas has fulfilled
his commitment for the first year; I am currently the only other donor
in the group besides Veritas (this is actually my second donation to the Methuselah
foundation after an initial one quite early on in 2003).
So why should you donate:
For one, I am sure Veritas would appreciate
if others shared the burden of the considerable commitment he had to make
upfront to start this group and secondly and more importantly it is really
important for all of us who regard aging as a disease that needs to fought to
stand up and be counted. Here is a point which I don't see made often
enough: While the Methuselah Foundation has had some success with
collecing money for their MPrize and SENS projects, the total number of
donors is only just above 500! Hey, this is about
how long we are all going to live, so shouldn't this number be at least
in the 100 thousands? These would also be the numbers required to get
this kind of effort onto the radar screen of politicians and science
funding agencies: once they understand that their electorate
wants more funds directed towards life extension research the money would really
start to flow. So wouldn't it be great if we made an effort to
drive up the number of donors by making lots of small donations (say, $10 but
more would of course be welcome) as part of the Betterhumans "The 300"
donor group? If a quarter of the Betterhumans member donated $10 each
we would more the double the total number of Methuselah Foundation donors!
This is what you need to do to donate:
Go to
this
page, enter your name and amount you want to donate, select commitment level 'normal' and 'once' if
you want to make a single donation, enter payment option, then go to the optional setup and select
Betterhumans from the menue and you are done.
Other options to support life extension research:
If you don't feel like donating but want to support SENS research
and biomedical research in general, consider to participate in the
Rosetta@home
distributed computing project which I believe has a lot of synergies with SENS and in particular with mitoSENS research (see this great update from SENS3 by Reason).
