For those familiar with BOINC (or Seti@home), a new AI project called Intelligence Realm has just released its Windows version. The project URL is www.intelligencerealm.com/aisystem There's a Team Kurzweil created there for transhumanists, singularitarians, and extropians alike.
For those unfamiliar with BOINC, it has a page on Wiki for more info. Basically you download a program than runs in the background (you'll never know its there) and it uses spare CPU time to do calculations for scientific projects. The computers running the program are networked to perform supercomputer-magnitude calculations. 1.3 million users, 2.7 million computers can't be wrong. The total BOINC system recently passed the 1 petaflop mark, which is more than twice as fast as the fastest supercomputer in the world according to Top500.org
The project coordinators believe that their research has shown how knowledge is represented in the brain and wish to recreate it in a strong-AI system.
Team Kurzweil is currently the number two ranked team there. Anyone is welcome to join.
I've always believed joining a distributed computing project such as Intelligence Realm is the number one thing the average Joe can do to help bring about the Singularity.
