From Atlanta - While the majority of Americans may still be overweight, at least their cholesterol is low. Results from a national survey have shown that the average cholesterol level for US adults has dropped to 199mg/dl. This marks the first time in 50 years that the average adult cholesterol level has been within the normal range of under 200mg/dl.

From Pennsylvania - Drug giant Merck has announced a recall of 1.2 million doses of a commonly-prescribed children's vaccination. The recall of both PedvaxHIB and Comvax was ordered after quality-control checks found that production equipment may not have been properly sterilized. Both vaccinations are designed to protect against Haemophilus influenzae type b, the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in children under 5.

And finally, from New York - Scientists have eased the debilitating symptoms of muscular dystrophy in mice by injecting modified stem cells from humans. After treatment, the mice showed stronger muscles and ran longer on a treadmill than other diseased mice. The result raises hope that people with the muscle-wasting genetic disorder could one day be treated with tissue from their own bodies.
