Insidermedicine: 12/4/07

From South Carolina - Fitness may be more important than waist size in predicting how long you live. Researchers following over 2500 subjects noted that those who exercised regularly but were obese lived longer than those who had a normal BMI but didn't exercise regularly. The research shows that no matter what your BMI is, regular exercise can increase your longevity.

From Greece - Some scientists still favor outdated therapies, despite research disproving their benefits. For example, many scientists still suggest that vitamin E may prevent heart disease, beta-carotene may improve longevity and estrogen may lower the chance of developing Alzheimer's. All of these notions have been refuted in randomized clinical trials.

And finally, from North Carolina - The ages at which exposure to peanuts and allergic reactions occur are falling. Researchers comparing peanut allergies in a recent cohort of patients to one 10 years earlier noted that the average age of developing an allergy had fallen from 24 to 18 months and the age of first exposure had fallen from 22 to 14 months. Children should not be introduced to peanuts until they are 3 years old if there is a family history of allergy.
