Do you want to live forever?

Channel 4 Documentary following the revolutionary life-extension and immortality ideas of this somewhat eccentric scientist, Dr. Aubrey de Grey. This show is all about the radical ideas of a Cambridge biomedical gerontologist called Aubrey de Grey who believes that, within the next 20-30 years, we could extend life indefinitely by addressing seven major factors in the aging process. He describes his work as Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS).

This documentary was appaulling. I got all my friends to watch it and was horrified that all they really did was go on a character assassination of De-Grey which totally drew focus off the real subject.

It wasn't that bad. One of his biggest distracters called him a modern-day Leonardo de Vinci! That's some pretty good bad-press. It was an introduction of these ideas to the mainstream. We've been exposed to these concepts for a while, and I don't think we realize how radical it can sound to someone hearing about it for the first time. Some shock, incredulity, and resistance is to be expected. And Minsky and others had a VERY favorable opinion of de Grey.

side note : Kurzweil didn't do a very good job 'dumbing' down his concepts for the masses. He didn't come off well at all. Performing with his female avatar didn't come off as too cool either.

Maybe de Grey is naive when it comes to the lab work. I don't know him personally, and some of his detractors have. But they didn't all dismiss life extension out of hand. Olshansky and others are actively working on aging and life extension on their own. They questioned de Grey's conclusions, methods and maybe even his motivations, but not necessarily the overall goal.

But the two best things about de Grey and the Methuselah Foundation are : A.) they WANT someone to elucidate on any points where their science may be bad. They aren't afraid to change their stance if they are wrong. B.) The Mprize isn't just for SENS. Any research which prolongs the lifespan of a mouse by the degree stipulated is eligible. They are pushing the science forward, even if it isn't his exact SENS plan. I wish that had been stressed more.

It enrages me how bad Olshansky's arguments are.

"Can you prove this sip of water won't give me eternal life?"

Well, yes.  Hello? Is that the best you can do?!!

Actually, I should be happy about that. We're on a good path :)

And yes, all the critics go for his character and do not talk about the real subject. Another of Olshansky's gems: "He's angrier now, I want the old Aubrey back."

It's a sad truth that many within established positions would like to keep us from believing that life extension is possible.

We'd start expecting more from our government...

You may be thinking "why would they want to inhibit such progress - don't they want to live as long as possible and be as healthy as possible?"

Some people really are that stupid. Some believe in the slippery slope argument, have vested interestsin the status quo, and are looking forward to an afterlife as inspired by their religion.

Many against Transhumanism try to portray the desire for enhancement as a weakness - especially those that are religious.

"Just accept your lot in life - let go and feel god's will and it will all be ok..."

Here's an example;

(i had to talk a walk into bio-luddite territory to get this information...)
