Raelians launch newest project: Clitoraid

George passed along a link today outlining Clitoraid, a new project from the Raelians. Here's the outline (if you couldn't guess):

Following the announcement made by Dr Lankoande, OBGYN in Burkina Faso (West Africa), stating that women and children of all ages who have suffered the atrocities of clitoral excision, or female genital mutilation the equivalent of male castration in its barbarity, now have the possibility to regain sexual pleasure and be whole once again, thanks to medical advances and scientific progress. Rael, the spiritual leader of the Raelian Movement decided to help as many women as possible to regain their sense of pleasure and founded Clitoraid, a private non-profit organization with the aim to sponsor those women who want to have their clitoris rebuilt.

Say what you will about the Raelians, but one things for sure: They are masters at getting publicity. (And yes, I appreciate the irony of that statement, given that I just fell into this trap.)

That is truly wonderful - so sorry for those women.

Here's a reader comment from BoingBoing:

"Hard to tell. The background info is pretty accurate, but restoring the clitoral nerve is nonsense. I assume it's a money making scheme. Sleazy way to make a buck."

They are a cult that makes money on idiotic claims that are sometimes based on some transhumanist proposals. So, Abolitionist, please reduce your enthusiasm.

I have a better idea.

How 'bout these Rael guys spend their money on ending practice of female genital mutilation in the first place?

That one's a bit harder to accomplish.  Basically requires a restructuring of societal views.  You know, like the Bush administration is failing to affect in the areas where it's commonplace.

"That one's a bit harder to accomplish.  Basically requires a restructuring of societal views." - one should make an effort. I seriously doubt that it's harder then the original proposition.

The point is that the effort is being made.  But it won't change while the generation in control remains in control, we have to affect the views of the younger people which is not something you do actively.  We need mild influence on everyone in their teens, twenties, and thirties so that as the once the older generation is gone, there will be people in power with values closer to our own.

Yeah--sigh--the world changes too damn slowly sometimes. Too many nutty cults and too little social progress.

I think if you have any negative comments about what the Raelians are trying to do here ask yourself "What am I doing to help change any injustice on the planet"? This is a serious problem and it is not just happening in Africa, it is happening in many countries around the world.  And for the disbelievers who think it is a scam and it cannot be done, a very famous French surgeon urologist named Doctor Pierre Foldes, who is not a Raelian, has been repairing women who have had this done to them for many years now. Most of the negative comments I have read about this comes from men who think that there are other more "worthy" causes that a Raelian or anyone for that matter can get involved with. Well I want to ask you, if there was a custom in your country that cut off your penis when you were five or six years old would you want someone anyone come to your aid and repair it? We are not only taking about a human beings pleasure but their fundamental right and dignity here. Yes, the best way would be to stop this barbaric tradition from happening, but what about the 150 million women and more who have lost their clitoris and dignity?  Do you just disregard them like yesterdays garbage. We are talking about human life here. Is yours more valuable then theirs? Before you make any comment, do some research about this custom and read the pages and pages of horror stories and I think you may feel differently about any organization who is positively trying to do something to help. And just to add a note soon there will be a hospital built in Burkina Faso Africa where all women can go and have this operation done for free by

Raelian docotrs and will be built by Raelians. What are you doing? If you would like to help go to the web site. www.clitoraid.org
