Enter the velomobile

Yesterday, we had a wildcat transit strike and I was forced to hitchhike into work. This has added to my ongoing frustration with a 45-minute commute by streetcar that takes 15 minutes by car. Annoyed, I began looking into buying a car, which I do sporadically following transit annoyances. But the combined cost of ownership--leasing, insuring, fuelling, parking--is ridiculous when living in the city. So I started looking at options, and have discovered the velomobile.

Velomobiles are typically single-passenger, human-powered bikes with lightweight covers. This makes them comfortable, environmentally friendly, all-weather vehicles.  You can also get them with electric motors to ease long commutes.

I'd seen a velomobile in Toronto recently, but was only slightly impressed. Sure, it looked cool and dry, but the design was somewhat clunky.

Now, however, a new store called Bluevelo has opened in Toronto, apparently capitalizing on a growing trend driven in part by high gas prices. The store sells some very, very cool vehicles, including the WAW pictured above.

I've contacted Bluevelo for some more information, and possibly a test drive. Sure, velomobiles are more expensive than bikes, but without the insurance, parking and gas costs, they're far, far cheaper than cars. And they're also freaking cool.

I can post more information as I get it. In the meantime, I'd love to hear from any velomobile users out there.

Simon, have you heard of xtracycle?

One of the problems I've had with bikes is that they're aren't well designed for hauling bulky cargo. Xtracycle tries to address that problem.

funny I always assumed my bike was-all weather.

Mr. F, I hadn't heard of Xtracycle. Interesting. For me, though, it's not about hauling cargo as much as it is about hauling my ass to work. So speed and all-weather comfort are key. As for all bikes being all-weather, star drive, you obviously don't live in Toronto :) We go from 35 C humid summer days and -35 C snowy winter days.

I see.  Down here it only occasionally dips below freezing but it is constantly wet.  Some people think I'm not to bike in the rain but I kinda like it actualy.

Yeah, mid-continental weather patterns are fierce! Obviously the Great Lakes do nothing to moderate this. Lake Michigan does nothing for Chicago and Lake Onterio does nothing for Toronto.

When you bike to work, you learn lots of little tricks, like carrying extra clothes in a waterproof pouch and changing and freshing up in the bathroom. This is especially necessary if you live in city where it rains a lot. That's what I do.

I think the usefulness of cars is beginning to diminish. More jobs and business meetings are being done by telecommuting. Urban planners, warped by decades of car use, have finally realized that low density urban sprawl is a bad idea. High density, pedestrian and cycle friendly cities are the wave of the future. Mass transit is finally improving on the west coast of the United States.

A few weeks ago I had talked about velomobiles,
and my interest in giving them a shot for commuting...
