Last Monday I wrote about
upcoming transhumanist-themed science cafés in Toronto.
A few days after writing that post, I got a call from a friend who works at the Ontario Science Centre, which is putting on this
event. My friend,
Kevin von Appen,
asked if I'd be interested in sitting on the panel for one of the
events I mentioned, the May 20th event called "Humans as Endangered
Species: Will machines make us obsolete?"
I accepted, and am now slated to appear alongside Toronto philosopher
Mark Walker of the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies.
Steve Mann may be our third panelist, but this has yet to be confirmed.
The cafés, apparently, are quite well-attended by passionate people.
They are now attracting about 90 people per month. The cafés were
recently reported in
The Globe and Mail (Canada's top national newspaper), and so organizers anticipate that the May 20 event will be even bigger than previous events.
So, if anyone's interested in coming out to say hi, have a few drinks
and join a spirited debate about the role of machine intelligence in
humanity's future, please join us at the
Rivoli on May 20 at 4 PM.
