First International In Vitro Meat Symposium

The In Vitro Meat Consortium will be having an In Vitro Meat Symposium in Aas, Norway April 9-11.  Topics will include separation and creation of stem cell cultures, large scale muscle tissue engineering, a feasibility study, and ongoing R&D on the subject.  I, of course, will not be going seeing as how my budget doesn't allow me to go any further than Denver for things like this, but if anyone finds themselves taking the trip I know I'd greatly appreciate a rundown of the events.  For more information on the subject you can look to New Harvest's website.

I don't know how many are as interested in this as myself but I hope it interests many more people than I expect.  Successful production on artificial meat would be a great step toward efficiency and safety in our food supply.

Plus it might keep some people from thinking so horribly of me just because I like cheeseburgers.

In Vitro Meat is crucial for creating nutritious food in a sustainable and ethical fashion. I fully support efforts in this direction. Hopefully it wont be too encumbered by patents and obstructed by the animal product industries.

The fact that it is a much cheaper way to produce meat means that there is big money to be made in this field, but the incentive alone might not be enough if there are too many obstacles and not enough willpower.

I remember seeing New Harvest requesting all sorts of patents, and I fear it may stifle innovation in this field that has been speculated about for ages.

Considering the ideas aren't exactly new, I tend to doubt the novelty of these patents.

Correction: New Harvest is a non-profit, and probably helping innovation. I was confused. That site I linked to lists the patents though.

Here is another very good link http://www.futurefood.org about the status quo of cultured meat (in-vitro-meat) research, but also about possibilities to lift vegetarian meat to higher levels of acceptance. Maybe an inspiration for the future?!
