Chaining Prometheus

I've noticed an unfortunate trend lately of people trying to incorporate revised political and spiritual views into Transhumanism.  I believe this is a mistake of epic scale.  The only function these groups serve is to relegate a valuable societal movement to cult status.  I, of course, am guilty of this myself, but unlike those I take issue with, I keep my views mostly internal(the exception being when my views and their relationship to H+ comes up in conversation).  As self identified transhumanists and futurists(and even Prometheans and Transtopians) we should be making it clear that scientific progress doesn't care what your religious and political views are.  The only real issue is that we all want to see the tech happen.

An accompanying issue to this(which I believe to be a substitute for religion in many cases) is that of immortality.  Bring the concepts up, sure, but don't tell people who haven't recieved thorough evidence that you're not a fruitcake that you plan on living billions of years as a computer drifting around encased in an artificial moon.  It doesn't help the cause.  Once people who aren't already transhumanists hear this they immediately lump transhumanists with self identified Jedi(which in many cases is also an unfortunate false assumption about people's grasp on reality) and geeks who spend all their time in their mother's basement playing Dungeons and Dragons and dreaming that they will one day be transmuted into elves.

Please, when discussing Transhumanism with those who have not been 'initiated'(I use this term because it's likely to be interpreted and used by those mistaken about the nature of H+ under it's traditional meaning) keep it simple and don't imply that for it to happen everyone will have to follow your cultural views.  It will help the progress of Transhumanism and, as a result, help the progress of the tech as more people support it.

Agreed.  I posted a thread regarding this a couple of months ago titled "What Transhumanism Isn't": http://www.betterhumans.com/forums/thread/6706.aspx

"Didn't we already debunk the "Transtopians" and "Promethians" as white supremecists?"

The Promethians actually seem to promote breeding in mixed race so I'm guessing it's a no on that one.  From what I've read, I'm not sure that the Transtopians are actually white supremacists, that could simply be a gut reaction stemming from their extremist(neo-eugenic) views.

You really need to read what the metakeywords are for that site

http://whois.domaintools.com/transtopia.org

Furthermore, a reverse IP search reveals that both transtopia and the prometheians share the same creators and owners as many other sites including www.american-thule-society.org www.cosmotheism.net www.designerchildren.com  www.eugenesis.com www.euvolution.com  www.orderofwhiteknights.org  www.prometheism.net

A while ago I emailed with the guy who runs (or is big in) Transtopia.

After a while I wandered on one of those white power sites (I believe it was stormfront) and who was there, posting?

The same transtopia guy. He was explaining transhumanism and eugenetics to the skins with the intent purpose of interesting them in joining the movement. Everybody draw your own conclusions.

I'd love to have URLS with evidence of this but alas.

I'd like to see all science advance in terms of our understanding and technical abilities, but I think how we apply our abilities should forever remain balanced by our ethical principles.

It's true, most people can't fathom the idea of Transhumanism. It's just too weird. I don't bother telling anyone about it, save my cousin and her husband, who are academics. They are interested in it to a degree but are not as passionate as I am.

There is a way to live the Transhumanist philosophy without explaining or justifying it. I use it at work all the time, if only to see things from an extremely macro level and staying a few steps ahead.

And like any group of adherents, each lives it in their own way. So what if some 15-yr old gamer calls himself a Transhumanist, that's his business. Whether his beliefs impact others around him in a positive way, that determines whether the label matters or not.

Compare it to Goth. There are so many types of Goth...corporate yuppie Goth (me), hippy Goth (Wiccans etc.), cyberGoth...45 yr old Goths, 12 yr old death bunnies...on and on. If someone labels themselves so, can you dispute it? Do they need to explain it?

Weird and dangerous (so called...like BDSM) are never easy to explain to the "uninitiated".

There is a limit to how much we can shape public perception. Nuclear energy is a technology that's 60 years old and people on both sides still have misconceptions about it.

As long as we publically proclaim that the Transtopia guy is a loon and has nothing to do with the WTA, we should be safe. As long as we work to keep transhumanism from getting associated with nonsense like flying saucers, astrology, psychic powers and so on, we should be fine.

Those that agree with the transhumanist point of view, of whatever political stripe or party they might favor, should work internally to bring that party into lines that promote transhumanist ideals.
