On the other side

When posthuman, what do you all want to do? I'm thinking going to interstellar space with enoug fuel and supplies, light years away from others besides a small group, partner, or just myself. Then just scan for evolving life, or just do math. Maybe stumble upon a dark plannet. I'm actually hoping faster than light communication is physically impossible. If I really need to expand my jupiter brain or need fuel, the nearest star should be harvestable. So, just chill.

Hmm.

I think I would create a convincing virtual world. Then I would temporarily suppress my memories, god-like intellect and abilities, and live there. I'd probably have a family and a job and...

Oh yeah.

That's what I'm doing now. Ha! Is there a "wake up" button around here anywhere? (Sounds a bit like mysticism doesn't it?)

Well, assuming that the above is not the case, I think that as a posthuman, I would like to experiment with consciousness. It would be cool to experience the world from the perspective of a star, or a river, or a stone. Or a flock of birds.

Ha ha--yeah it would be fun to supress most of the jupiter brain to play Baduk or something. Experiencing the world from other perspectives is possible, but the limitations of lightspeed makes being an avatar a little difficult. You'll have latencies involved. If you can manage to engineer yourself into a bird body, you can just do it directly I suppose. As for the perspecitve of a start, river, or stone, well, to do that you'd have to kill yourself I guess.

I have no idea at all what I'd want to do. When I get to that point, maybe I will.

Mr. Farlops, would you have any ideas on how many people you'd want to be in a reasonable light-sphere with? Still in the thick of it near Earth or on the outer rims? Interstellar by yourself?

See, I actually never want to get to the point where I'm considered 'posthuman'.  I'm just shooting for 'enhanced human'.  Few cybernetic parts to make things go more smoothly, enhanced intellect, maybe all around tougher organic body, but I want to keep my general experience the same.  Then I want to colonize space and settle on some newly terraformed world.

Hi Ideal,

I've got a question here: what do you mean when you say you wish to keep your general experience the same? enhancing your intellect, having a tougher body etc will these not change fundamentally the experience of being you?

I think many people, once these options become possible, will probably spend  a lot of time mining out the human experience space. But I think once the livespans extend into the millions and billions of years, human experiences will seem very limited. The human brain is not well suited for such enormous spans of time.

Me, on the other hand, I'd be strongly tempted to take the plunge into non-human life right away if given the chance. I'm more of a discarder than a reveler:

But I wonder. Is this some kind of weird deathwish I have or something? Maybe I'm not serious. To tell the truth I really haven't given the matter that much thought. To be honest I'm rather timid in my transhumanism. I don't do body mod or caloric restriction.

Mr. Farlops, I'm quite the discarder, having already done away with testicles! Frankly I'd like to go from human to Jupiter brain in less than a year. Why wait?

I have very little idea about what I would do. What I want to do is basicaly to try everything I want to try.

I don't think so.  My desire for increased intellect only extends to a level just beyond current ideas of human maximum.  The tougher organic body, as I envision it, would keep my sensations the same but prevent bones from breaking or skin tearing at the stress they can currently withstand.  I'm not shooting for being Superman, just an enhanced version of what I am now.
